The Straits Settlements established in 1826, the Straits Settlements were territories controlled by the British East India Company. On 1st April, 1967, it came under direct British rule as a Crown colony. The settlements consisted of four individual settlements - Melaka (then known as Malacca), Dinding (now Manjung), Penang (the island was once known as Prince of Wales Island; and Seberang Perai, formerly known as Province Wellesley) and Singapore.
